Why 90-100 min discs

For technical reasons 63 min 550 MB were produced first, bigger capacities were not possible beginning of the 90tes. The standard of music CD's since its introduction in 1982, was set to 74 minutes playing time. Some years after the introduction of CD-R, the technicians managed to produce a CD disc with a maximum duty cycle of 74 min CD-R in the mass production process.

The 74 minute 650MB CD-R have since been established (as withthe music CD) as the standard. As some music discs have a running time of 74 min and beyond, they have refined the technology so that music CD's were able to achieve maximum playing time of about 100 min.

Logischerweise bestand kurz danach auch bei CD Rohlingen die Nachfrage nach größeren Kapazitäten. Die 80 min 700MB CD-Rohlinge wurden 1996/1997 eingeführt, und ist mittlerweile ist der Standard bei CD-Rohlingen geworden. Einige Jahren später wurden dann die 90 Min 800 MB und die 100 Min 900 MB CD Rohlinge produktionsreif gemacht.

Of course there then was a large demand for CD discs with a larger capacity. The 80 minute 700MB CD-R was introduced 1996/1997, and it has become standard for blank CDs. Some years later the 90 min 100 min 800 MB and 900 MB CD-R was ready for production. Larger capacities are not possible for blank CDs, for technical reasons. The CD-R has a diameter of 12 cm and on this surface there is not more space than the maximum of 900 MB, which gives about 100 minutes running time.

Are there also oversize DVD or Blu-Ray discs ?

DVD and Blu-Ray have a large storage capacity so that the development of excess length on DVD or Blu-Ray was never necessary.

With DVD and Blu-Ray the expansion of storage capacity was reached by working on a DVD with 2 layers and the Blu-Ray up to 4layers.

The maximum storage capacity for DVD is therefore 9.4 GB (2 x4.7GB) and the Blu-Ray even 200 GB per blank (4 x 25 GB). The 100 GB Blu-Ray is expected in 2011 and the 200 GB Blu-Ray in early 2012.

Can you burn 90 and 100 min discs with every burner and is playing always possible?

Older players can have problems playing extended Discs. The 90-minute discs were not yet available on the market and could therefore not be matched to the electronics of the CD player.

Playing 100 min CD's should not be a problem anymore on drives that have been produced after 2004. In some cases, it happens on newer drives that 100 min CD's can not be played though.

Burning 90 / 100 min CD-R

In older burners with a maximum recording speed of 16x (or lower), it is possible that a 90 / 100 Min CD-R can not be burned.

Important, the burning rate for 90 or 100 min blanks is usually lower than on 80 min discs.

The burner will automatically detect the required burning rate and allow the combustion process to proceed slower. The burning takes a little longer, the quality of the combustion process will improve though. Unfortunately we can not describe each individual software program, as each new version includes changes. But the basic principle is the same with most burning software.

In order to burn discs with extra length, they must set the maximum CD length more than the standard set 80 min.

As a next step you must enable the combustion process "Disc-at-once". Usually this happens if the tick - "no multisession"- is set!

The burning process can be started now. The software could still sign up now with the question whether you really want to burn an oversize CD-R. Confirm with "Yes" or like with Nero press "Burn OverBurn Disk "
